French Press recipe for one cup

Use 15 g coffee and 250 g water just off the boil. This balanced ratio is easy to remember and simple to scale.

  • Grind: coarse, with an even texture similar to rough sea salt.
  • Water: 250 g at about 93 to 96°C.
  • Brew time: 4 minutes, followed by a slow press.
  • For 500 g water, use 30 g coffee and keep the same brew time.

How to make French Press coffee step by step

Preheat the glass, add the coffee, pour in all the water and make sure all the grounds are wet. Stir gently, then rest the lid on top without pressing. At 4 minutes, lower the plunger with steady pressure and pour the coffee immediately.

  • Pressing too quickly can push fine grounds into the cup. Slow is smoother.
  • Leaving brewed coffee in the press makes the last cup bitter. Decant it.
  • Too weak means a slightly finer grind or a little more coffee. Too bitter means a coarser grind.

Quick answers

What is the best French Press coffee ratio?

Start with 15 g coffee to 250 g water, close to a 1:16.5 ratio. Use 30 g coffee for 500 g water. Adjust the coffee dose, not the brew time, when you want a stronger or lighter cup.

What grind size should I use for French Press?

Use a coarse, even grind that resembles rough sea salt. If the cup tastes thin, grind a little finer. If it tastes harsh or silty, grind coarser and pour gently.

How long should French Press coffee brew?

Four minutes is a dependable starting point. Press slowly, then pour the coffee out immediately so it does not continue extracting in the brewer.
